Jonathan Stark
Tennis Director
Two-Time Grand Slam Champion & Former World #1
He is Oregon’s most successful professional tennis player, but Jonathan Stark hopes it won’t stay that way for long. He is dedicated to equipping his athletes at the Oregon Elite Tennis Academy with the mental and physical tools necessary to write the next great tennis story.
Stark’s own story begins on the courts in Medford, OR where he was a two-time singles state champion before going on to Stanford where he earned All-American accolades in both singles and doubles.
From there, Stark spent 11 years on the ATP Tour, ranking as high as No. 1 in doubles and No. 36 in singles. He holds two ATP singles titles (Bolzano and Singapore) and 19 ATP doubles titles. He won the doubles French Open in 1994 with Bryon Black, the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles in 1995 with Martina Navratilova, and the World Doubles Championship in 1997 with Rick Leach. He was a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1994-1997.
Stark then volunteered with the men’s tennis team at the University of Washington, worked as junior program director at the Seattle Tennis Club, and served as assistant coach at Lewis & Clark College.
Stark was inducted into the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Hall of Fame in 2011.
As both a singles and doubles champion, Stark has a unique understanding of the independent problem solving that every great player must develop as well as the teamwork skills necessary for success on the court and in life.
“Tennis is the only sport in which, during competition, you don’t have a coach, you keep your own score, and you referee yourself,” Stark says. “You must be a resilient problem solver because when you’re competing, you stand alone out there.”
Fostering independent problem-solving skills is key to Stark’s coaching approach. He knows this will help the players of the Oregon Elite Tennis Academy compete at the highest levels in high school, college, and beyond.
Off the court, Stark lives in Portland with his wife, Dana, and their three children. He raises money for local charities and seeks to raise awareness for the sport of tennis in the Pacific Northwest.
